8 reasons to hire a lawyer
Not sure if you should hire a lawyer or take the DIY route?  While doing it yourself may seem cheaper, it may end up costing you more money (and certainly more stress) in the long run. Here's why:

1.  The law is complex and can be confusing

Navigating the law is very complicated, as there are many laws, rules, and regulations. That's why lawyers go to school for an average of seven years after high school and must pass the bar exam. It's not an easy test. In 2017, 25% of aspiring lawyers failed it.

2. You've never heard of the term force majur

Do you know Latin? If not, you'll need a lawyer to understand complex terms such as “force majur” or “writ of certiorari.”

3. Self-representation can lead to mistakes

If you are not well-versed in the law, you will likely make mistakes. Filing the wrong document or not following a required procedure could result in you losing your case. If you do, the judge may order you to pay for the other side’s court costs, which could be even more costly than hiring a lawyer in the first place.

4. Your chances of winning your case are higher with a lawyer

In 2017, a survey of people applying for Social Security Disability benefits found that without a lawyer, only 23 percent of people were approved.

50 percent who received legal aid were approved.

5. You should assume the opposing side has a lawyer

In 2019, a study found that approximately 90 percent of landlords have legal representation.  However, only 10 percent of tenants do.

This matters when tenants find themselves in court, squaring off against a landlord. In New York City, tenants with a lawyer win their eviction cases approximately 90 percent of the time.

6.  Lawyers know how to negotiate and settle disputes

Lawyers have been trained and educated on knowing when to negotiate and when to litigate with opposing counsel.

7. Assurance of privacy

Due to attorney-client privilege, any information that you reveal to your lawyer is kept confidential. This legal ethics rule ensures that all information shared between you and your lawyer must be kept private.

8. Lawyers will spot both the strength and weaknesses of your case

If you represent yourself, you may not be able to see the weak points of your case.  Therefore, it could be harder for you to create a strong defense.

A lawyer will be able to see both the strengths and weaknesses of your case. It is important to understand these weaknesses because this allows your lawyer to perceive the other party's argument and create a solid defense in response.
